Dedicated to the memory of Martin Hayward

Martin was born on 12th September 1962 in Haywards Heath. He was the younger brother to Peter Fryers.  Martin was never the best at attending school, although he was bright and passed his 11+ to get into Grammar School.  At around the age of 11 the family relocated to Torquay, Devon.  Martin had a love growing up playing Petanque which was a form of bowls of which Martin won many medals and shields.

When Martin left school he went to work with his Dad John, he then went on to run a newsagents on Lucius Street, Torquay.  In 1987, Martin, who was a keen photographer, was taking photos of Mandy’s King Charles “Benji”, and then invited Mandy to go for a drive to the moors.  They shared a cream tea on the moors, and from that moment love blossomed between the two, and they married on 18th March 1989, in Paignton’s Oldway Mansion.

Martin and Mandy have three daughters, which they named Rebecca, Louise, Natalie, Patrica, and Chloe Marie. They also have 8 grandchildren, which is soon to be 9.

For over 20 years the family lived at the house in Halsteads Road, which was always open to many people, thus Martin and Mandy had many other ‘children’ being their daughter's partners and friends.

Outside of work Martin enjoyed the social scene, and living life to the full, sometimes even leading his younger sister astray but also making sure that he protected her too.

Martin was always the life and soul of any party, he enjoyed many Bar-B-Ques day trips out with family and friends, and also the odd practical joke, and when I say odd, I mean odd, such as turning up to a Halloween Party with mealworms stuck all over his face.

In Martin’s last 7 months or so he has shown strength, courage and a fight like no other, whilst supporting others with their own situations.

Martin found peace and calm during his stay at Rowcroft Hospice.  The staff were like angels and were always checking Martin had everything and more.  Martin still managed to spend time laughing and joking with the staff alongside his wife Mandy and his sister Mel right up until he took his last breath.
